Northern Frisia

St. Peter Ording is Germany's most popular North Sea resort in Northern Frisia. Yet, off-season in late winter only a few tourists go astray in the tidal waters. Beach furniture such as showers, swings and the typical beach chairs are dismantled and storms whip heavy rains over the beach. Quite hard conditions for photography. When staying in the mudflats of St. Peter, the lighthouse of Westerhever is the most prominent landmark for orientation.
The famous and beautiful lighthouse is called Westerheversand. It was built in 1905 on a terp within extensive and protected marshes on the seaside of a dike. It is situated within the Wadden Sea National Park but freely accessible for visits. It's two houses are managed by the park service. Already in late summer 2017 I stayed there for a long weekend with friends of the German Society for Nature Photography (GDT) (see series "Westerheversand" here at Behance). In March 2019, where this series was taken, I had the opportunity again to stay in Westerheversand for a further memorable photo weekend with them. With heavy rain and strong winds, conditions were rougher in late winter. But again, the photos reflect the dramatic and ever changing light as well as the weather conditions on this exposed piece of earth, where you can feel the vastness of space probably better than in any other region in Germany.
